Wayne Rooney Departs Plymouth Argyle Amid Struggles in the Championship.

Plymouth Argyle has announced the mutual departure of manager Wayne Rooney after seven months in charge. The team currently sits at the bottom of the Championship table, four points adrift of safety.

Rooney sought to implement a tactical style inspired by Pep Guardiola, focusing on building attacks from the back. This included utilizing goalkeepers to start plays and full-backs advancing into midfield. Despite achieving some notable results at home, such as a 3-2 victory over Sunderland and two thrilling 3-3 draws, the overall performance of Argyle has been inconsistent.

Statistically, Plymouth Argyle has a possession average of 48.6%, ranking 16th in the league. However, the team struggles in key areas, including being last in expected goals (xG) with 19.39 and second-last in shots on target with 78. They also have the league’s worst expected goals against (xGA) at 44.03 and have faced 141 shots on their goal.

Away games have been particularly disastrous for Argyle, with the team failing to secure a single victory in 13 matches, earning just two points and scoring only three goals while conceding 35.

Despite these challenges, Rooney retained the support of the dressing room. BBC Radio Devon's reporter, Alan Richardson, noted that the players were willing to give their all for Rooney, who was well-liked and respected by everyone at Plymouth Argyle.

When dealing with the media, Rooney was regarded as one of the most approachable managers. He was always available for questions and responded with openness and clarity.

With Rooney's departure, interim coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will lead Argyle into their next game against Bristol City on New Year's Day.
